The nature

The East Vättern Scarp Landscape is an undulating hilly terrain of primitive ground with rock exposed from the cover of moraine. The slopes spread from the hills of Huskvarna in the south cutting the valley of Skärstad to the hills of Omberg in the north. Large areas of the landscape are considered as areas of national interest for environmental care since the diversity of slopes, gorges covered with deciduous forest as well as small-scale properties for cultivation accommodates an extremely rich flora and fauna. More than 200 species listed in the national redlist have been found within the area, several of them discovered during inventories by members of the Forest Group, who have been exploring the region since 1994.

In summer 2012 the East Vättern Scarp Landscape became Sweden’s fifth biosphere reserve.
